The first full day of the 13th Heidelberg Laureate Forum has ended and we have collected some of the day’s highlights for you. Check them out in the “Snapshots” video above or over on our YouTube channel!

Monday kicked off with a number of rapid-fire Spark Talks on a variety of subjects, including one by recent Fields Medal recipient Jacob Tsimerman on "AI Safety and Mathematics." Not shying away from addressing the risks of AI, he still ultimately concluded: "The way we deal with real risks to society successfully is not to ignore them, but to look at them, open-eyed and clear-eyed, and see where the bad outcomes are, and try to steer away from them." 

During his talk "Can We Build an AI Scientist?", 2024 ACM Prize in Computing recipient Torsten Hoefler made the prediction that "everything that is verifiable will be automated." 

After lunch, 20 young researchers took to the stage to showcase their research in short 3-minute talks. Afterwards, parallel mathematics talks from Karen Vogtmann and Mouhamed Moustapha Fall respectively explored "Moduli Spaces of Graphs" and tackled the question "Must a Membrane with a Free and Level Edge Be Round?".
