Congratulations to 2022 ACM A.M. Turing Award Recipient, Bob Metcalfe!

We would like to congratulate the 2022 ACM A.M. Turing Award recipient Bob Metcalfe, who is being recognized "for the invention, standardization, and commercialization of Ethernet."

In 1973, Metcalfe designed a "broadcast communication network" that connected some of the first personal computers, laying the groundwork for what we now know as Ethernet. Metcalfe's original design ideas have enabled the bandwidth of Ethernet to grow geometrically, scaling from its original 2.94 megabits per second to today's data rates of up to 400 Gbps.

As one of the foundational technologies of the internet, Ethernet is the main conduit of wired network communications around the world and continues to support more than 5 billion users, thus enabling much of modern life.

Metcalfe will be formally presented with the award at the ACM Awards Banquet on June 10.
